If you get Marvel’s subscription emails, you might have recently noticed that Steve Rogers is coming back as Captain America for 2016… and he has a new shield. I don’t know what it is about change in comics, but I’ve yet to be a fan of it. It’s weird. I love change in life. I thrive to learn new things, embracing the ever shifting paradigm, but when it comes to my reading and watching material, I can’t stand change. So for me, there is only one Captain America.
Don’t get me wrong. Sam Wilson is an awesome character; his Falcon suit both in comics and MCU is inspiring. I entirely loved that as a regular ol’ sometimes-genius human, he ignited that ultimate desire for us to someday fly like a bird, with mechanical wings at our back. And, if some other character was to become the Falcon, I’d be just as #SadPanda about that too.
I think it has to do with back stories. I tend to associate not just the character, but also their alter ego with the same backstory. So for me, Captain America was “born” when Steve Rogers got the super serum enhancement. It just reads wrong for me when the comic I’m reading happens to actually be Bucky Barnes, or Wilson or Barton under the suit.
New Steve Rogers Captain America #1
So YAY, Steve Rogers is back! I kinda cheered this afternoon when I read that his super serum somehow rebooted, making room for a return to the superhero field. Then I saw his sheild, and sighed. I mean, it totally is a cool looking shield. I am all kinds of curious to know what the glowing bit at the bottom is all about, and something tells me this shield will be deadly against its foes.
But it’s not the frisbee. Just going by the cover alone, it looks like Wilson isn’t back to being the Falcon, but is instead a… co-captain? Still equipped with the original shield?
Remember when only a select few could throw that shield, ’cause it wasn’t actually as easy as throwing a frisbee?
The new costume change as a whole for Rogers looks pretty sweet though. With the darker blue hues, should we expect a darker Steve Rogers?
What are your thoughts?
PS I can’t believe my second post for this site is a whineage on an upcoming comic. Doh! I #PinkieSwear, I won’t complain too much here, promise!
